My name is Devon Tam and I am a sophomore Interactive Multimedia major at The College of New Jersey with experience in Photoshop, Final Cut Pro, and Adobe Suite. I am also familiar with Processing, HTML, and CSS. In the future, I hope to combine my degree with my passion for activism. I am looking forward to learning even more programs and figuring out how I can apply my skills for the greater good.
I believe in design for a purpose. That could mean to benefit the target user, to make a statement, or to give new life to a material. It is not enough to “make something for the sake of making something.” Rather I need a reason to make, and from that reason draw inspiration. This is mostly why I like to work on projects for social good; the idea of being a positive influence in the world gives me motivation to create. Above all else, I like to love what I do, to invest my passion and time into a piece, and to turn my dedication into a work with purpose.
Looking to the future is something I have always struggled with. This is not because I cannot see myself doing anything; rather, I can picture too many futures for myself. I want to do it all! I have too many interests to be defined by a singular job. However, my first career goal is to gain experience in the communications industry. With the Interactive Multimedia major being an interdisciplinary cross-section between communications, computer science, and art, I have a lot to learn about the industry so my first prerogative is to learn it all. Ideally, I would like to have a hand in both the for-profit and non-profit sectors. From there, my participation in a variety of fields will help to dictate my next career goals.
